Horse Riding - Trekking
Raygill Riding Centre has access to valleys and vistas that seem to have been created for both exhilarating and relaxing trekking. Raygill Riding Centre offer expertly led treks from small parties to larger expeditions. All the Centre's leaders and accompaniers are highly qualified and very knowledgeable of the local trek routes.
The River Tees is joined by the Rivers Lune and Balder, which in their upper valleys is reminiscent of a 'miniature lake district', comprised of the Selset, Grassholme, Balderhead, Blackton and Hury reservoirs. Numerous small streams flow off the adjacent peaty moor lands to create a stunning backdrop to an invigorating trek. Many different variations of flora and fauna can be seen here such as juniper scrub, bilberry and wildlife such as the common sandpiper and whooper swans.
An Example Trek
One of the trek's will take you up the River Tees, to Spring Wood and over to Cotherstone Moor. Cotherstone is situated at the confluence of the Tees and Balder and may have been of importance in Viking times. The trek then continues into Baldersdale, round the Blackton and Hury Reservoirs, where you will be met with a hearty picnic lunch. The scenery here is magnificent and the presence of fascinating ancient history really inspires the imagination. The River Balder is thought to have taken its name from Balder, the Norse god of light and innocence. It has been suggested that there are earthworks close by which may be the remains of a Viking temple to the honour of Balder.
The trek takes a leisurely ride back through the river, out of Baldersdale and back into Teesdale via the Goldsborough ranges, finally taking you home through Deepdale Wood where if you're lucky you may spot a Brown Argus or a Dark Green Fritillary butterfly.
