Horse Riding - Pub Rides

There's nothing better than a drink on the hoof as a well-earned pit stop! The Raygill Pub Ride does just that and then concludes with dropping you off for drinks and a dinner reservation later in the day.

From Raygill Riding Centre, the pub ride follows an incredibly scenic route up the River Tees to Cotherston Village. Cotherstone, which is famous as the home of Cotherstone cheese, is a pretty little village. A stop for lunch at the Fox and Hounds, a pub dating back to 1750, is a chance to relax in friendly and cosy surroundings. Real ale, freshly prepared hot sandwiches, soups and salads are on offer.

The ride then continues for an hour and a half over Cotherstone Moor. You will see diverse landscape from dry heather to bog vegetation such as purple grass and soft rush. The colours are vibrant and horse back gives no better vantage point from which to view them.

The Rose and Crown pub & restaurant in Romaldkirk is the final destination for more drinks and an optional dinner reservation. The staff from Raygill Riding Centre will deliver you to the door. All you need to worry about is what to choose from the menu!

Most of the village of Romaldkirk looks much as it did in the eighteenth century, blending naturally with the rolling hills of Teesdale from which you will have just ridden. The Rose and Crown is a splendid 18th century coaching inn set on the green of this picturesque village.

The Rose and Crown has won many awards for its food. There are two dining options, the "Crown Brasserie" for a pub-gastro supper and the Restaurant for dinner. From the web site of the Rose and Crown, descriptions of each read:
Photo: Rose And Crown Pub"Chill out in The Crown Brasserie. Intimate red walls, candles in waxy old bottles and big pictures of pompous French waiters. Maybe a starter, main course and pud... or just a main dish, and an espresso to finish. (The Brasserie) Polished oak panelling, crisp white tablecloths and sparkling silver. Soft lights and delicious food... the table is yours for the night. (The Restaurant)"
The wine list is excellent and real ales are pulled by hand. Raygill Riding Centre will be happy to arrange a taxi homeward for you.
